Chapter 2: The Attack
�� After helping a thoroughly bruised X out of the trash, Cain returned to his lab.
�� Why�d ya� have to do that?� X asked Zero.
�� Because you electrocuted me and slightly burned my hair.�
�� If it was only slightly burned why�d you get so mad?�
�� Because it was still burned.�
�� But-� X didn�t have time to finish his sentence. The alarm sounded, ringing loudly through the base. Zero rushed to Dr. Cain�s lab followed closely by X.
�� What is it Doc?� Asked Zero.
�� It�s a maverick attack!� Dr. Cain said. �There�s about twenty mavericks attacking the city near here. I sent the 41st out to deal with them.�
�� So what�s with the big alarm?� X asked.
�� It�s maverick�s, X, you idiot!� Zero yelled.�Sigma could be back!�
�� Oh,� came X�s reply.
�� X, Zero,� Dr. Cain called them. �We�re receiving a transmission from the 41st.�
�� A green reploid, about 5� 11 appeared on the comm screen. �Somebody help us!� The reploid screamed. �There are only seven of us left. three of those critically wounded and the rest of us have taken plenty of hits! We�ve killed none of the mavericks!� Suddenly the reploid exploded and the screen went black.
�� Six !?!?� Zero said not believing it. �There were seventy-four hunters in that unit!�
�� They�ve gotta be strong,� X said.
�� Zero, X, get your units and take out those mavericks!�
�� Right away!� They both said in unison.

�� X, Zero, the 17th,and the #00 special unit all transported to the middle of the city. As the mavericks saw them they rushed the hunters. The hunters fired their weapons at the mavericks. The shots either missed, were blocked by beam sabers, or didn�t do any damage.
�� Holy shit!� X screamed.
�� Come on, X,� Zero said. �Let�s take out their commander. He drew his beam saber. He and X rushed through the battlefield. There was one maverick, standing about fifty feet away, that seemed to be giving orders.
�� It was a mainly orange reploid, about six foot two. It what looked like a giant plug on his right hand. It fired blue energy. He had green on him too, and blue, snake-like eyes. He had another one of the large plugs on his chest and a smaller version on his fore-head.
�� Who are you?� X screamed at him.
�� The reploid looked at X. �I am Captain ShockMan, commander of the Hellz Knights, the strongest maverick fighting force ever. I am second in command of the mavericks altogether. You must be Mega Man X.� He looked at Zero. �Zero?!?! You serve the hunters?!?! Damn, I guess I must destroy you too then.�
�� Try it,� Zero countered.
�� ShockMan leaped at them, drawing a blue-bladed beam saber. He slashed at zero with the saber. Zero attempted to block with his own beam saber but the weapon was thrown from his hand by the impact with ShockMan�s beam saber. �How the hell?� Zero asked, amazed.
�� You are no match for me, puny hunters!� ShockMan said. �I�ll crush you.�
�� X fired a blast he�d been charging at ShockMan as Zero rained the maverick with smaller shots. A blue sphere of energy appeared around ShockMan and absorbed all the blasts.� He laughed. A blue blast came from the plug-like piece on ShockMan�s right hand. The blast hit X and sent the powerful hunter flying against the wall of a building.
�� Zero rushed over to X. He looked down at the body. �He�s alive,� Zero said. �But most of his circuits are fried.� He turned to ShockMan. �I�ll kill you! I swear I�ll kill you!�
�� Ha ha ha!� ShockMan laughed. He held up his left hand. It glowed green. A ball of energy appeared in his hand and flew at Zero. The blast hit the hunter hard in the face. Zero collapsed to the ground.
�� How could I lose?� He asked, gasping for breath. He felt his consciousness slipping away. No, he couldn�t let himself die. If he did, ShockMan would open him up and get the location of the hunter base. He and his Hellz Knights would crush the hunters. He watched his forces run and disappear as� Dr. Cain gave the order to retreat. His and X�s squad�s had both taken a beating. Not a single one of the mavericks had died. He didn�t have time to think of anything else as his eyes closed and he lost consciousness.
